I have lived in Colorado since 1962 and have had a career in commercial property management for over 25 years. I have been curling since June of 2006, thanks to my son, Sean. The chance to play this game with him is the most important aspect of curling for me.
Like most of us that were or are new to curling, I have learned as I have gone along, while being greatly aided by some of our experienced curlers. After my initial learning curve with the sport, I also began to travel to other clubs, both in the US and a few in Canada. These clubs have included other arena clubs like our own, as well as several clubs playing on dedicated curling ice. From the traveling I have learned more about the game and how much more enjoyable it can be when played on real curling ice. Of particular interest to me now is learning how other clubs operate in hopes of helping the DCC establish its own dedicated curling facility.
During the past five years I have also obtained USCA Level 1 certifications, both as an instructor and as an official. The officials certification allowed me to participate in the 2009 US Olympic Trials in Broomfield as a timer and on-ice observer. The instructors certification helped me feel more comfortable with our many Learn-to-Curls, which are very important for bringing new members safely into our group. Hopefully, we will find additional ice time to introduce more people to the game and to help existing members improve their technique.
In summing up, in my five years of curling I have worked to figure out and improve upon my delivery; learned to better deal with arena ice; traveled to several other clubs; gotten additional instruction and certifications to improve my knowledge of the game; helped with numerous Learn-to-Curls; am currently serving on the Board; and am now actively taking part in the search for real ice as Chairman of the Building Committee.
